DIY Wedding Cake Pops

Cake Pops are one of my favorite treats to make.  Many people have the patience and creativity to make these sweets on their own, others may want to stick to the professionals.  Here is a step-by-step guide on how to make these Cake Pops for your guests by A Beautiful Mess.

1. Bake a cake. Any flavor you like, I used a box mix Red Velvet cake for these. Pictured is half of the cake recipe, as it made two square pans.

2. Add 2 cups of frosting. Any kind you like is fine, I used a store-bought cream cheese frosting for these.

3. Use your clean hands to mix together the frosting and cake. This step is pretty messy!

4. Form your cake pop batter into small balls, about 3-4 tablespoons each. You don’t want them to be too big, just so they easily fit in the palm of your hand.

1. Once you have formed all your pops (a standard size cake will make around 50 pops) put them in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours or the freezer for half and hour or so.

2. While those are in the refrigerator you can get your candy melts and other supplies ready. I like to use candy melts with 1 tablespoon of oil (canola or vegetable) and melt them in the microwave. You will probably use about twice what is pictured for all the pops.

3. Dip a lollipop stick in the melted chocolate.

4. Push the stick 2/3 through a cold cake pop.

5. Dip the pop in the melted chocolate.

6. Allow any excess chocolate to drip off the pop before inverting it in the craft foam.

You will need to leave the pops in the foam while the chocolate sets. I like to drizzle on a bit more chocolate after I’ve dipped all the pops, just to add some texture. Once the chocolate is set these are ready to serve to guests! Enjoy and have fun customizing with different flavors and color combinations.

My Nana

To my followers,

I apologize for not blogging for the past week and a half.  I have previously blogged about my grandmother and how she inspires me to blog about weddings, plan weddings, and my ultimate passion for weddings.  It brings me great pain to write that she has passed (losing her battle to cancer), but she would have loved for me to push forward with my love of weddings and blogging.

To my new followers: My Nana & my grandfather had been married for 53 years and showed me what the epitimy of love, marriage, and family is. 53 years is a lifetime for some people and to watch that many years of love is amazing. I have shared pictures their 50th anniversary in previous posts.

I love you always Nana & you will forever live in my heart.

xoxo

My Interview with Celebrity Jewelry Designer, Jean Dousset

I received the amazing opportunity to interview Jean Dousset, Celebrity Jewelry Designer.  He has designed Eva Longoria & Amy Adams’ engagement ring. Here is the follow up to my post on Spring Ring Trends 2012.  Check out my interview and some history on one talented man, a man that sees the beauty many brides do.

1.    What trends/styles do you see becoming a trend in 2012?
The micro setting is the most important trend in the past few decades. It is on every model. Additionally, the metal should have a supporting role in jewelry making and therefore disappear below the diamonds. Jewelry is three dimensional and should be brilliant from all angles - micro setting provides just that.

2.    What is your favorite cut/ring style?
My favorite is the cushion cut diamond because it is the original. Before the brilliant cut was developed, the cushion cut was the basis for diamond cutting. I am happy to see the resurgence of this cut and its new found popularity.

3.    What inspires you?

I am inspired by tradition and heritage passed on by jewelers such as Cartier, Van Cleef and Arpels, from whom I learned all their is to know about jewelry. Craftsmanship and attention to detail, as well as uncompromising quality are also all inspiring.

4.    What advice do you have for a couple/man shopping for an engagement ring?Men should try as much as possible to make the proposal and the ring a surprise. It is a very special moment for any woman in her life. The surprise will add a significant layer to the sentiment. That being said, men should create the ring that she wants, and it’s always recommended to get some cues from their girlfriends. For example, what is the preferred cut and overall style. Men should absolutely think of a budget they are comfortable with and ask the jewelers they are speaking with to work with that specific amount. The key is to optimize their budget while striking the right balance between quality and beauty.

5.    Do you prefer designing an engagement ring with the couple or with the groom to be? Why?
I prefer working with the groom and building the excitement with him, although I think it is crucial to incorporate her wishes. She will be the one wearing the ring everyday.

6.    Having been born into the house of Cartier, was there any pressure to become a jewelry designer? Did you ever consider a career in a different field?
I got my first job in a prestigious jewelry house in Paris almost by accident. I was about to start a job in commercial real estate when I got an interview to work at Chaumet, Place vendome in Paris. I stepped in their store and had a moment of clarity. I was excited all day after that. I could not stop thinking of the atmosphere, the jewels and the history. Being a descendant of Louis Cartier plays a role today as I come into realizing myself as a designer. It did not make me feel entitled at all, and I only hope he is watching over me.

7.    What is your all time favorite piece that you have created?
I would say Eva Longoria’s engagement ring because she was very happy with the result and it essentially launched me as a designer. It was a beautiful ring from the stone to the execution. It has a special meaning for me because she also happened to be a wonderful and supportive person.

8.    If you could design a piece for anyone, who would it be for?
I would have loved to make Natalie Portman’s ring. I like everything about her as an artist and a women…and she married an french man!
Now, I would secretly like to make Jennifer Anniston’ s next engagement ring. But also January Jones, Emma Stone and the list goes on…

9.    What is the best advice you’ve received throughout your career?
My father taught me to be an expert at what you do.

10.    What is the most exciting aspect when designing a ring?
The result meeting the expectations.

There are so many different cuts and styles of dresses out there. I have previously posted about how much I love Doc Milo’s invitations and party goods.  Every item I always look at is so chic and trendy.  Take a look at these Doc Milo Cake Pop sets sold on Favor Warehouse.  Each set includes striped sticks/stems with feather toppers, and a patterned stand for each individual cake pop! So chic and so inexpensive. These are great for bridal showers, engagement parties, or if you are just entertaining at home.

Many brides mistaken linens for solid, bland, or basic linens that are dyed.  There is much more to it than that.  Linens have sequins, embroidery, they can have gold sewn into them, and so much more. They can be used as seat covers, chair cushions, or even used as dividers for a room or drapery. There is so much time and intricate detailing that goes into linens that can be made of cotton, chiffon, lace, etc.  Take a look at the different shades of purple and how they contrast in this picture. Also pay attention to how dramatic the linens are, but how simple the flowers & decor are.

These cakes are beautiful, aren’t they?

They are all fake cakes designed by Eleganza Cakes Faux Wedding Cake Rentals. Many brides are having a fake cake present at the reception, but behind the scenes, there is a pre made cake or selection of special desserts that are ready to be served.

The prices on cakes, if you don’t have the money can be outrageous.  These are their prices:

  • The basic rental of a stock 2 tier cake is $50. For each tier that is added, the price increases by $50. Price includes ribbon, flowers and the cake topper. For example, any stock 5 tier cake would cost $200 to rent.
  •  If you do not see what you want and choose a custom designed cake there is a minimum $100 added.

Check out their site for more price options.

Although they are based in California, there are many companies in the states providing this service in New York, Chicago, Florida, etc.

Would you rent a fake cake?

Whether you decide to buy a real cake or a styrofoam cake (yes, I said styrofoam), presentation is key.  I have been to so many weddings where the cake is served and it does not look very appetizing.  Make sure to discuss with your venue or caterer what you are expecting and what they should be executing.

As I’ve said before, white is definitely coming back.  All white decor, all white flowers, and all white cakes.  This centerpiece is a beautiful example of how chic, yet simple white can look.  The orchids are just beautiful and were designed by Winston Flowers.
